How to Choose in Four Questions

1. All-in-one or two-piece? All-in-one means one thing to carry and 20 sessions back to back. Two-piece means a replaceable Holder and a familiar format, with a pause every 2 or 3 sessions while the Holder recharges — which takes about two minutes, not an hour.
2. Do you need Pause Mode? It’s on ILUMA i and i PRIME only, and it only starts within the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs of a session. If interruptions regularly cost you sticks, that decides your model. If not, ignore it.
3. Do you want Autostart? Every model has it except the original ILUMA One, which needs a button press. Small difference, but you make it several times a day.
4. Do the materials matter? The PRIME models use anodised aluminium; the rest are moulded. On specifications they’re the same as their standard siblings, so this is purely about the object you carry.

Why ILUMA Devices Don’t Need Cleaning

Worth understanding properly, because it’s the main practical reason to move on from an older IQOS.

Blade-based devices heated the stick from the outside using a physical blade inserted into it. Tobacco residue built up on that blade, cleaning was a routine task, and the blade itself was the most fragile component in the device.

ILUMA has no blade. The induction coil stays in the device and the metal heating element sits inside the TEREA stick, leaving with it when you bin it. Nothing accumulates internally, which means no cleaning sticks, no brushes, no cleaning cycle, and one less part that can break.

One consequence: the device only activates when it detects a SMARTCORE stick. That’s how it identifies a compatible consumable, and it’s why HEETS won’t start any ILUMA device.

Compatibility Rules Worth Knowing

• TEREA sticks work in every ILUMA device, from any origin: Japan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Armenia, and the UAE edition.
• HEETS won’t work in any ILUMA device. The system doesn’t recognise them.
• Never put a TEREA stick in a blade-based IQOS. It contains a metal heating element and can damage the older device.
• The two generations cross-charge. An i-series Holder charges in an original ILUMA Pocket Charger and vice versa, cables and adaptors are interchangeable, and accessories fit both ways. No firmware update is needed.
• Features don’t transfer. An older Holder charged in an i-series charger is still an older Holder.

Storage in UAE Conditions

The stated operating range for these devices is roughly 0°C to 40°C. UAE summer afternoons exceed it outdoors, and a parked car exceeds it by a wide margin.

Heat causes permanent battery capacity loss that doesn’t recover — a device that gave 20 sessions per charge starts giving fifteen. It also destroys the menthol and aromatic compounds in your sticks long before it affects the battery, which is why a pack left in a car can look perfect and taste like almost nothing.
