ILUMA i is the classic two-piece device of the ILUMA i series — the familiar Holder and Pocket Charger format IQOS users already know, rebuilt with the full set of advanced features.
It runs Philip Morris International’s SMARTCORE Induction System. An induction coil activates the metal heating element sealed inside each TEREA stick, heating tobacco from within rather than burning it. No blade, no residue, no cleaning.
On top of that sit four features: Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, and FlexBattery.
Four colourways: Midnight Black, Breeze Blue, Digital Violet, and Terracotta Brown.
Pause Mode Only Works in the First Half of a Session
Pause Mode is the feature people buy the i series for, and there’s a constraint on it that almost nothing published mentions. It matters, because it decides whether the feature will be there when you actually need it.

Heating, session length, uses per charge, and charging time are unchanged. What you’re paying for is the Touch Screen, the flexibility features, and the third consecutive use.
ILUMA i or ILUMA i PRIME?
This one surprises people: the feature sets are identical. Both carry Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, and Autostart, and both manage up to 3 consecutive uses.
The difference is the body. ILUMA i PRIME uses an anodised aluminium Pocket Charger with a more refined finish. ILUMA i uses the familiar moulded design at a lower price.
If you want the features, either model gives you all of them. If you want the materials as well, that’s what i PRIME is for.
The Four Colourways
- IQOS ILUMA i Midnight Black — the most understated and the most widely chosen.
- IQOS ILUMA i Breeze Blue — cool, clear blue.
- IQOS ILUMA i Digital Violet — deep purple, the most distinctive of the four.
- IQOS ILUMA i Terracotta Brown — warm earth tone, the softest neutral.
All four are the same device. Colour is the only difference.

How It Works
Charge the Pocket Charger fully before first use — around 2 hours 15 minutes over USB-C. Slide the Holder in to top it up between sessions.
Insert a TEREA stick into the Holder up to the line on the filter, without twisting. Autostart begins heating on its own and the Touch Screen shows preheating progress. The session runs up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, with FlexPuff possibly extending the count.
Autostop ends the experience if the stick is moved or removed. Two useful shortcuts on the Holder: lift it during use to see how many uses remain, and double tap it to get a vibration reading of how much of the session is left.

Why There’s No Cleaning
Every IQOS generation before ILUMA heated sticks with a physical blade, which accumulated residue and needed a regular cleaning routine. It was also the most fragile part of the device.
ILUMA i has no blade. The induction coil sits in the Holder and the metal heating element sits inside the TEREA stick, leaving with it when binned. Nothing accumulates internally, so there’s no cleaning cycle at all — just an occasional wipe of the exterior.

Frequently Asked Questions
When can I use Pause Mode?
Only in Performance Mode, and only during the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs of an experience. After that point the option is no longer available for that session.
How long can a session stay paused?
Up to 8 minutes. If you don’t resume within that window, the Holder switches off and the experience ends.
Does pausing cost me anything?
Yes. Pausing disables FlexPuff for that experience and reduces consecutive uses from 3 to 2. The “up to 3 consecutive uses” figure assumes you haven’t paused.
What’s the difference between ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME?
The feature sets are identical — both have Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, Autostart, and up to 3 consecutive uses. The difference is the Pocket Charger body: i PRIME uses anodised aluminium with a more refined finish.
What does ILUMA i add over ILUMA Standard?
Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery, and a third consecutive use. Heating temperature, session length, charging time, and uses per charge are the same on both.
Does it need cleaning?
No. There’s no heating blade, so no residue accumulates. The heating element sits inside each TEREA stick and is discarded with it.
Which sticks does it take?
TEREA sticks only, from any origin. HEETS and other non-SMARTCORE sticks won’t activate it, and TEREA should never be used in an older blade-based IQOS device.
