ILUMA i is Philip Morris International’s latest generation of heated tobacco devices — the successor to the original ILUMA line, built around the same SMARTCORE Induction System and adding a set of features designed to adapt to how you actually smoke.
Three models make up the range: ILUMA i ONE, ILUMA i, and ILUMA i PRIME.
Every one of them heats TEREA sticks from within using an induction coil rather than a blade. No ash, no residue, and no cleaning routine of any kind.
The i Series Isn’t One Feature Set — It’s Three
Many buyers assume that every IQOS ILUMA i device includes the same features simply because they all carry the “i” name. In reality, each model offers a different combination of features, so choosing the right device depends on which functions matter most to you.

What You Get with the IQOS ILUMA i ONE
The IQOS ILUMA i ONE includes Autostart and FlexPuff, but it does not include the Touch Screen, Pause Mode, or FlexBattery features. If those advanced functions are important to you, you’ll need to choose either the IQOS ILUMA i or the IQOS ILUMA i PRIME.
Where the i ONE Has the Advantage
Although it’s the entry-level model, the IQOS ILUMA i ONE supports up to 20 consecutive sessions on a full charge because it uses an all-in-one design. The two-piece ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME support up to 3 consecutive sessions before the Holder needs to recharge.
IQOS ILUMA i vs IQOS ILUMA i PRIME
The IQOS ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA i PRIME share the same core features, including the Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexBattery, Autostart, and FlexPuff. The primary difference is the Pocket Charger design. The PRIME model features a premium anodised aluminium body and higher-end finish, while the standard ILUMA i uses a moulded construction.
Choosing Between the Three
Work down these questions in order and you’ll land on the right one.
- Do you need Pause Mode? If interruptions regularly cut your sessions short, you need ILUMA i or i PRIME. If not, i ONE stays in play and it’s the cheapest of the three.
- Do you use several sticks in a sitting? If yes, i ONE’s 20 consecutive sessions beat the two-piece models’ 3 by a wide margin. If you smoke one or two at a time, that advantage doesn’t apply to you.
- One piece or two? Two-piece means a small Holder that’s easy to leave on a table, but also a component you can replace separately. All-in-one means one thing to carry and one thing to lose.
- Does the material matter? Only i PRIME uses anodised aluminium. If it does matter, that’s the one. If it doesn’t, ILUMA i gives identical features for less.
What Every i Model Shares
- SMARTCORE Induction System — an induction coil activates the metal heating element inside each TEREA stick. No blade anywhere in the range.
- No cleaning, ever — the heating element leaves with the stick, so nothing accumulates inside the device.
- Autostart and Autostop — heating begins on stick insertion and stops if the stick is moved or removed. Autostart can be disabled through the IQOS app on the two-piece models.
- FlexPuff — the device reads your puff pattern and may add up to 4 extra puffs, taking a session from 14 to 18 within the same 6-minute window. It’s system-controlled and doesn’t activate every time.
- Session length — up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, identical across all three.
- Heating — approximately 350°C, around 15 seconds to heat up on the two-piece models.
- TEREA sticks only — no ILUMA device activates for HEETS or any non-SMARTCORE stick.

IQOS ILUMA i PRIME
The same full feature set in an anodised aluminium body. 2600 mAh, up to 3 consecutive uses, 20 per charge, around 2 hours 15 minutes to charge. Three colourways.
Coming From an Original ILUMA?
The generations work together, which makes upgrading straightforward:
- An i PRIME Holder charges in an ILUMA PRIME Pocket Charger, and vice versa
- Charging cables and power adaptors are interchangeable
- ILUMA accessories fit i-series devices and the other way round
- No firmware update is needed on the older device
- The sticks don’t change at all
What doesn’t transfer is the features. An older ILUMA Holder charged in an i-series Pocket Charger remains an older Holder — no FlexPuff, no Pause Mode. The advanced features live in the i hardware.
Upgrading From a Blade-Based IQOS?
If you’re still on an IQOS 3 Duo or earlier, two things matter more than which i model you choose:
Your sticks change. Blade devices use HEETS; every ILUMA device uses TEREA. They aren’t interchangeable in either direction, and putting a TEREA stick into a blade device can damage it.
Your cleaning routine ends. There’s no blade to accumulate residue, so cleaning sticks and brushes become irrelevant.

Storage Matters in This Climate
The stated operating range for these devices is roughly 0°C to 40°C. UAE summer afternoons exceed it outdoors, and a parked car exceeds it dramatically.
