The IQOS ILUMA i is the current generation of heated tobacco device from Philip Morris International, and it runs the same TEREA SMARTCORE STICKS as the ILUMA range before it. Three devices sit in it: the ILUMA i ONE, the ILUMA i Standard and the ILUMA i PRIME.

Every one of them uses the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM, so there is no heating blade in any of them, and no cleaning at all. Where they differ is in how much control you get over a session and how the device is built around your day.

This page covers what separates them, what changed from the previous ILUMA generation, and which one suits which kind of user.

What the i Series Actually Changed

This is the part worth being direct about, because a lot of listings imply more than happened.

The heating did not change. The SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM in an ILUMA i works the same way it did in the original ILUMA. A metal element sits inside the TEREA stick itself, and the device heats it by induction rather than pushing a blade into the tobacco. Same technology, same stick, same result.

What the i series added is an interface and three settings behind it. That is the whole upgrade, and it is a real one, but it is a control upgrade rather than a performance upgrade.

Touch Screen. New to this generation, and present on the i Standard and i PRIME Holders. It shows preheating progress, how much time is left in the session, and how many uses the Holder battery still holds. Two dashes means two uses remain, one dash means one, and a circled zero means the Holder is flat.

Pause Mode. Also new. Swipe down across the full length of the Touch Screen and the session stops for up to eight minutes, then swipe up to resume. Because it depends on the screen, the i ONE does not have it.

FlexPuff. The Holder measures how much aerosol you have actually drawn and may grant up to four extra puffs inside the same six-minute window. This one is on all three devices, including the i ONE, since it needs no screen.

FlexBattery. Two Holder battery modes, Performance and Eco, switched inside the IQOS App over Bluetooth 5.0. Performance is the factory default.

So of the four headline features, one is available across the whole range, two require the Touch Screen, and one lives entirely in the app. That distribution is what actually decides which device you should buy.

One more thing worth knowing before you compare models: these features interact with each other, and not always in the direction you would guess. Using Pause switches FlexPuff off for that session and reduces how many consecutive uses you get. Eco Mode removes Pause completely. The full map of what disables what sits on the ILUMA i PRIME page, and it is worth reading before you decide whether the top of the range earns its price.

Choose by How Your Day Gets Interrupted

Most comparison charts rank these three devices as a ladder, cheapest to most expensive, as if the answer is simply how much you want to spend. That framing is not very useful, because the deciding factor for most people is nothing to do with budget.

It is whether your sessions get interrupted, and what happens to you when they do.

If your sessions almost never get interrupted, Pause Mode is a feature you will pay for and forget. You put the stick in, you finish it, you move on. In that case the i ONE covers you, and the money saved is real. You still get FlexPuff, still get the induction heating, still get every TEREA flavour. What you give up is the ability to stop mid-session and the Pocket Charger that tops the Holder back up on the move.

If you get interrupted constantly, a phone call, a child, a customer, a meeting starting early, then Pause Mode is the single feature that changes your day. Without it, an interruption costs you the rest of the stick. With it, you have an eight-minute grace period. This is the case for the i Standard or the i PRIME, and it is a much stronger argument for them than any spec sheet.

If you are out of reach of a charger for long stretches, the Pocket Charger is what matters, not the screen. The i ONE runs roughly 20 sessions and then it stops until you plug it in. The i Standard and i PRIME carry a charger with them, so the Holder gets topped up between uses and the practical ceiling is much higher. Long shifts, long drives across the Emirates, travel days.

If the device sits on a desk or a table most of the day, in an office, a majlis, a shared space, the deciding factor is usually which one you can identify as yours and which one you are happy to be seen with. That is a materials and colour question, and it is the honest case for the i PRIME.

Two rows in that table do most of the work. The Pocket Charger row separates the i ONE from the other two. The Holder model row shows that the i Standard and the i PRIME run the identical Holder, which is why their feature lists match exactly.

The i PRIME does not do anything the i Standard cannot. It is built differently, and for some people that is worth paying for. It is a legitimate reason to buy one, and it is a different reason from the one most listings imply.

Full breakdowns sit on each device page: ILUMA i ONE, ILUMA i Standard and ILUMA i PRIME.

Upgrading From an Older Device

Two different situations here, and they have very different answers.

Coming from a blade device such as the IQOS 3 DUO. This is a real change. Blade heating left tobacco residue in the chamber, which meant cleaning sticks, brushes and a maintenance habit. Induction removes that completely, because the heating element is inside the TEREA stick rather than inside the device. There is nothing to clean on an ILUMA i, ever. You also cannot use your old HEETS in it, so the entire stick supply changes at the same time.

Coming from an ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME or ILUMA ONE. Smaller change. The heating is the same, and your TEREA sticks carry over without any adjustment. What you gain is the Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery. If none of those solve a problem you actually have, the previous generation is still a perfectly good device and there is no urgency here.

What does not transfer, in either case:

  • Wraps, sleeves and rings. The ILUMA i bodies are shaped differently from the previous generation, so older accessories will not fit. Buy accessories made specifically for the ILUMA i model you own.
  • Holders between generations. An older ILUMA Holder will not work in an ILUMA i Pocket Charger, and the reverse is also true.
  • HEETS. Not compatible with any ILUMA or ILUMA i device.

What does transfer:

  • All TEREA sticks, every flavour, every origin country.
  • USB-C cables and power adaptors, as long as the adaptor is rated 5V and 2A.

Using Any ILUMA i Device

The sequence is the same across all three, with one difference at step five.

  1. Charge fully before first use. The i ONE takes around 90 minutes, the i Standard and i PRIME Pocket Chargers around 135.
  2. On the two-piece models, hold the Pocket Charger button for four seconds to power it on. The Holder then charges automatically once placed inside.
  3. Insert a TEREA stick up to the printed line on the filter, until the device vibrates.
  4. Heating starts by itself. On the i Standard and i PRIME you can also swipe up on the Touch Screen to trigger it, and the screen shows progress.
  5. The second vibration means it is ready. On the i ONE, the Light Guide tells you the same thing without a screen.
  6. Use for up to six minutes or fourteen puffs. A vibration warns you when about 30 seconds or two puffs remain.
  7. Remove the used stick and dispose of it. One stick, one session, on every model. Reinserting a used stick does not work and is not safe.

If a stick ever feels stuck, power the device off before removing it. The ILUMA Stick Remover handles this cleanly if it happens more than occasionally.

TEREA Compatibility

Every ILUMA i device runs every TEREA SMARTCORE STICK, regardless of which country the variant comes from. We stock five origins, each with its own flavour range:

The full TEREA range covers every flavour we carry, sorted by origin and profile.

HEETS will not work in any of these devices. HEETS were designed for blade heating and contain no induction core, so there is nothing for the device to heat. Forcing one in achieves nothing and can mark the stick chamber.

Storage and Care in the UAE

Heat is the constraint that matters here, and it applies identically to all three devices.

Never leave any ILUMA i in a parked car during summer. Cabin temperatures in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi pass 60°C easily, and that is above the safe limit for a lithium-ion cell. The damage is permanent and shows up as reduced sessions per charge rather than as an obvious failure.

Keep the device out of prolonged direct sunlight. Sustained UV exposure affects exterior finishes over months, and deeper or lighter colours show it before matte black does.

Fine dust is the other local issue. There is no blade to clog and no residue path, so the interior is genuinely maintenance-free, but grit in the Holder slot can scratch the stick chamber over time. A dry wipe now and then is enough. Never use water, alcohol or cleaning sprays on any part of the device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ILUMA and ILUMA i?

The heating is identical. Both use the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM and both run the same TEREA sticks. The i generation adds a Touch Screen on two of its three models, plus Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery. It is an upgrade in control over a session, not in how the tobacco is heated.

Which ILUMA i should I buy?

Start with whether your sessions get interrupted. If they rarely do, the i ONE is enough. If they often do, you want Pause Mode, which means the i Standard or the i PRIME. Between those two, the features are identical and the difference is build and materials.

Is the ILUMA i PRIME faster or stronger than the i Standard?

No. They share the same M0010 Holder and the same feature set, including Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery. The difference is the exterior materials, the Pocket Charger design and the colour range.

Does the ILUMA i ONE have Pause Mode?

No. Pause requires a full-length swipe on the Touch Screen, and the i ONE has no screen. It does have FlexPuff, which works without one.

Can I use my TEREA sticks from my old ILUMA?

Yes, all of them, with no adjustment at all. Stick compatibility is unchanged across the ILUMA and ILUMA i generations, whatever origin country the variant comes from.

Will my old wraps and accessories fit an ILUMA i?

No. The ILUMA i bodies are shaped differently from the previous generation. Accessories need to match the specific model, so an ILUMA i Standard wrap will not fit an ILUMA i PRIME either.

Do any of these devices need cleaning?

None of them. The heating element sits inside the TEREA stick rather than inside the device, so no residue builds up in the chamber. This is the main practical difference from blade devices such as the IQOS 3 DUO.

How do I change to Eco Mode?

Through the IQOS App only, paired over Bluetooth 5.0. There is no way to switch FlexBattery modes from the device itself. Eco Mode limits the Holder to a single use and removes Pause Mode entirely, so it suits light users far more than heavy ones.

Why did FlexPuff not give me extra puffs?

The most common reason is that Pause was used during that session, since the two do not run together. FlexPuff also depends on how much aerosol you actually drew, so it does not trigger on every session even when Pause is untouched.

Can I charge an ILUMA i Holder in an older ILUMA Pocket Charger?

No. Holders and Pocket Chargers cross-charge within the ILUMA i family, but not across generations. An i Standard Holder charges fine in an i PRIME Pocket Charger, and not at all in an original ILUMA one.

Where can I buy an ILUMA i in the UAE?

All three models ship from us across the Emirates, with same-day delivery in Dubai. Browse the ILUMA i ONE, ILUMA i Standard or ILUMA i PRIME pages for colours and current stock.
