Description

There are two ways to make a citrus menthol stick. You can make it sweet, or you can make it sharp. Black Yellow Menthol goes sharp, and that decision explains everything about it.

The citrus here reads as lime zest rather than lemonade. It’s acidic, clean, and noticeably drier than the standard Yellow Menthol, sitting on top of the strong cooling that every “Black” edition carries. Nothing about it is soft.

Crafted by Philip Morris International (PMI) for the SMARTCORE Induction System. Heat-not-burn, smoke-free, no ash.

Yellow Menthol or Black Yellow Menthol?

This is the only comparison that matters, because these two share a citrus family and split on everything else.

Same idea, two volumes. If Yellow Menthol has ever felt like it fades into the background, this is the version that won’t.

The Dryness Is a Feature, Not a Flaw

Worth setting expectations on properly, since this catches people out. Black Yellow finishes dry. Not harsh, not bitter, but there’s an astringent quality to the acidity that some users love and others need a session to adjust to.

It works because of what dryness does in heat. A sweet or creamy stick can feel heavy when it’s 45°C outside. A dry, acidic one cuts through and actually refreshes, the way a sharp drink does versus a milky one.

The Black Family, Sorted

Japan’s Black editions all deliver strong cooling. What separates them is the second note:

  • TEREA Black Menthol carries dark blackberry depth. Coldest of the three, no citrus, no sweetness.
  • TEREA Black Purple Menthol goes sweet with blueberry. The fruitiest of the family.
  • TEREA Black Yellow Menthol takes the citrus route. Driest and sharpest, and the only one that reads as a daytime stick rather than an evening one.

That daytime quality is the practical difference. Black Menthol and Black Purple both feel like sticks you sit down with. Black Yellow feels like a stick you have between things.

Who It’s Built For

  • Outdoor users in UAE summer. Sharp acidity plus strong cooling is the most heat-effective combination in the Japanese range.
  • Morning and afternoon smokers. The citrus edge works next to coffee and doesn’t clash with food the way sweeter menthols can.
  • Yellow Menthol regulars who want more. Same citrus DNA, considerably more intensity.
  • Anyone avoiding sweet menthols. Between this and Black Menthol, these are the two Black editions that skip sugar entirely.

Reconsider if you’re sensitive to strong throat cooling, prefer creamy or rounded profiles, or dislike dryness in a finish. In those cases Bright Menthol offers a crisper but gentler citrus experience, and Mint is the softest cooling option Japan makes.

Getting the Best Out of It

  1. Insert the stick into your IQOS ILUMA or Lambda holder, colored end up, no twisting.
  2. Wait for the ready vibration before drawing.
  3. Keep puffs spaced out. Rapid consecutive draws amplify the dryness, and this stick is already the driest in the Japanese lineup.
  4. Bin the stick after up to 14 puffs or roughly 6 minutes.

On device choice. Black editions carry a heavier flavour-oil load than standard sticks, and the ILUMA i series handles that load more efficiently than older induction models. Its extended-puff behaviour also helps with the slight dryness that can appear at the very end of a Black session. Any ILUMA works, but the i models suit this family best.

On pausing. Resume a paused Black stick and the first puff comes back colder than you left it. Menthol compounds settle and concentrate while the session is on hold. Fine if you want the jolt, worth knowing if you don’t.

Storage, Especially in This Climate

Citrus aromatics and menthol compounds both degrade quickly in heat, and this stick depends on both. A pack left in a hot car can lose its sharpness in an afternoon while the packaging still looks perfectly fine.

Signs a stick has gone flat: no aroma when you open the foil, a dull or metallic first puff, and weak vapour despite a charged device. Store packs sealed, cool, and away from sunlight. Full detail in our storage guide.

30 Days With the Sharp One

🍋 30-Day Log — TEREA Black Yellow Menthol Japan

Days 1–7: The acidity is the first thing you register, before the cold even lands. Drier than expected. Took about four sticks before it stopped feeling unusual and started feeling deliberate.

Days 8–15: Found its slot immediately once we stopped treating it as an all-day stick. Mornings and hot afternoons only. In the evening it feels out of place.

Days 16–23: Ran it against standard Yellow Menthol back to back. Same citrus family, completely different intent. Yellow accompanies you, Black Yellow interrupts you, in a good way.

Days 24–30: Verdict: the most climate-appropriate stick in our Japanese rotation. Not a comfort flavour, and it doesn’t want to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does TEREA Black Yellow Menthol taste like?

Sharp lime-zest citrus over strong menthol cooling, with the tobacco sitting in the background. The finish is dry and acidic rather than sweet, which is what separates it from most flavoured menthol sticks.

How is it different from regular Yellow Menthol?

Same citrus family, much higher intensity. Standard Yellow Menthol is softer, rounder, and leans lemon. Black Yellow is sharper, drier, and carries considerably stronger cooling. Think of it as Yellow Menthol turned up.

Is it the strongest menthol in the Japanese range?

No. Black Menthol holds that position with no fruit and maximum cooling. Black Yellow sits in the strong tier alongside the other Black editions, with citrus as its defining second note.

Does the dry finish mean the stick is stale?

Not necessarily. A dry, astringent finish is part of this flavour’s design. A genuinely stale stick shows different symptoms: no aroma from the foil, a flat or metallic first puff, and weak vapour despite a charged device.

Which device suits it best?

Any IQOS ILUMA model works, but the ILUMA i series handles the heavier oil load of Black editions more efficiently and helps with end-of-session dryness. Lambda i8, i9, and i10 are also fully compatible.

Does it contain more nicotine than milder sticks?

No. Every TEREA flavour carries approximately 0.5 mg per stick regardless of cooling strength. The intensity you feel comes from the menthol and citrus load, not from nicotine.
